DAYTON, Ohio – Senior shortstop
Owen Clyne hit his team-leading seventh home run to help the Patriots defeat the Flyers, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon to win the series at Woerner Field in Dayton, Ohio.
THE LEADOFF
- Clyne had three hits including a home run and three RBI.
- Junior first baseman Jake Butler had two hits with a triple, two RBI and scored a run.
- Freshman second baseman Julius Bagnerise had two hits, one RBI and scored two runs.
- Sophomore left fielder Lucas Alberti had two hits with a triple, one RBI and scored two runs.
Dayton (28-22, 12-14 A-10) took the lead against George Mason (25-24, 15-12 A-10) freshman starter
Aiden Parker in the bottom of the third. With two outs and runners on first and second, Flyers junior catcher Ryan MacDougall hit a three-run home run to right field.
The Patriots responded in the top of the fourth against Dayton sophomore starter Carson Samuels. Alberti led off with a single and graduate student center fielder
Luciano Terilli followed with a double. Butler drove in two runs with a triple to right-center to put the Patriots on the board and senior designated hitter
Evan Blanchard plated a run with a ground out to tie the game 3-3.
In the top of the fifth, Clyne drove in a run with a single and Alberti plated another with a ground out against Dayton freshman reliever Austin McNabb to give the Patriots the lead for good, 5-3. Dayton got a run back in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out, RBI-single against George Mason graduate student reliever
Diego Cardenas.
In the top of the seventh, Clyne hit his team-leading seventh home run and Terilli drove in another with a ground out to extend the lead to 7-4. The Flyers scored their last run of the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Bagnerise drove in a run with a single and Clyne doubled in a run for the 9-5 final score.
For the Patriots, Parker (2-0) allowed three runs on three hits in 4.0 innings and earned the win. Cardendas gave up two runs on three hits in 5.0 innings and earned his third save.
Clyne went 3-for-5 with his seventh home run and three RBI. Alberti was 2-for-4 with his first triple of the season, one RBI and two runs scored. Butler finished 2-for-4 with his first triple of the season, two RBI and scored a run.
The Flyers used six pitchers in the game. Samuels allowed three runs on five hits in 3.2 innings. McNabb (4-3) gave up two runs on two hits, retired one batter in the outing, and took the loss.
The Patriots conclude the regular season at home against La Salle beginning Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 at Spuhler Field.
