CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Patriots fell to No. 23 Virginia, 5-1, on Tuesday night at Disharoon Park in Charlottesville, Va.
George Mason (19-23, 10-11 A-10) took the lead against Virginia (30-16, 12-12 ACC) sophomore starter Max Strammel in the top of the third. Junior catcher
Vincent Cowdrey led off with a single and senior right fielder
Drew Canody reached on a fielder's choice, with Cowdrey going to third on a throwing error. Freshman second baseman
Jackson Morse followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
Virginia tied the score in the bottom of the third when junior second baseman Joe Tiroly hit a two-out, solo home run off Patriots junior starter
Tanner Kaler.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Cavaliers sophomore right fielder Zach Jackson was hit by a pitch, went to second on a balk, stole third and scored on a sacrifice bunt to make it 2-1.
Virginia tacked on a run in the home half of the fifth with back-to-back two out doubles against junior
Shaun Okeeffe to make the score 3-1.
The Cavaliers extended the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh against Patriots freshman
Aiden Parker. Virginia junior catcher Jake Weatherspoon drove in two runs with a double to left field.
For the Patriots, Kaler (1-2) allowed two runs on two hits in 4.0 innings with six strikeouts and three walks and took the loss. Okeeffe gave up one run on two hits in the fifth inning. Graduate student

For the Cavaliers, Strammel allowed one unearned run on two hits in 4.0 innings. Graduate student Lucas Hartman (9-1) gave up two hits in 2.1 innings and earned the win. Graduate student Tyler Kapa earned his 11 save of the season.
Junior first baseman
Matthew Westley went 2-for-4, Cowdrey was 1-for-3 and scored a run, and Morse drove in his eighth run of the season.
The Patriots host George Washington for a three-game Atlantic 10 series beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
