FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason softball (25-20, 9-9 A-10) secured a 4-1 victory over Howard (24-15, 17-1 MEAC) at the George Mason Softball Complex on Wednesday, April 22. The home team capitalized on two solo home runs from
Tess Altevers Harris to clinch the win, while holding Howard to just one run over seven innings.
In the first inning, Altevers Harris put the Patriots on the board with a solo home run to left field. The score stood at 1-0 at the end of the opening inning.
In the fourth inning, Altevers Harris extended the lead in her second at-bat with another solo home run, marking her ninth homer of the season, bringing the score to 2-0 after four.
Howard responded in the fifth inning when Angel Riggins scored on a single by Aniyah Whipper, narrowing the gap to 2-1. However, the Patriots maintained their lead.
In the sixth inning, the Green & Gold capitalized on the Bison's errors.
Jessica Chan, who pinch-ran for
Kaleigh Friend, scored on a throwing error. Altevers Harris also reached on the error and later scored on
Alyssa Hopkins' single, extending the lead to 4–1. That would prove to be the final run of the game.
Tess Altevers Harris led the team with a season-high three runs scored and two home runs.
Alyssa Hopkins added two hits and one RBI, showcasing her consistency at the plate.
Bri Lencz pitched 4.0 innings, allowing one earned run and recording a strikeout, improving her record to 8-3.
Abbey Lane contributed 3.0 innings of scoreless pitching to start the midweek matchup, allowing just one hit while striking out one. Both pitchers combined for a solid performance, maintaining control throughout the game and limiting the opposition's scoring opportunities.
George Mason will host its final home series of the season with a three-game Atlantic 10 matchup against conference leader Loyola Chicago. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 25 at noon, followed by the finale on Sunday, April 26 also at noon at the George Mason Softball Complex.
