FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – The George Mason University rowing program's Second Varsity 8+ boat continued its spring momentum with a grand final victory at Sunday's Mason Invitational.
The Patriot boat finished second in its heat (7:53.90) but saved its best for last, navigating intense conditions to win the grand final by nearly 15 seconds. The triumph placed GMU ahead of crews from Thomas Jefferson and Loyola (Md.). It marked the second straight regatta the 2V8+ put together an outstanding performance.
Elsewhere at Sunday's regatta, George Mason's V4+ won its opening heat (9:24.10), then finished third in its grand final (10:24.70).
"Today proved to be a competitive day of racing," head coach
Joseph Richards said. "Thanks to all the student-athletes, coaches, volunteers, referees and others who helped make it happen. Our team was led by our second varsity eight again. They had an impressive victory that showed a lot of grit and determination in some really challenging conditions. Our first four also raced well, coming in third. We're looking forward to continuing to build speed and refine our skills going to our last races of the season."
The Green & Gold V8+ finished third in its heat (7:48.40) and petite final (8:28.90), while the 2V4+ finished its heat in 9:28.40 and final in 10:44.80. That final time placed the Patriots second in their petite final, which included V4+ and 2V4+ boats.
The 3V8+ boat for George Mason posted a heat time of 9:22.20 and final time of 11:34.10.
Next up for the Patriots, GMU heads to its penultimate regatta of the season. The Green & Gold will race at the Novak Memorial Metropolitan Championship on May 2 in New Rochelle, N.Y.
