Fairfax, Va. – George Mason golf finished runner-up to host Penn State (-9) at the 49th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate held at the Penn State Blue Course on campus. It's the second runner-up finish for the Patriots and fifth top five result during the spring season. The Patriots (+2) finished ahead of A-10 opponent Rhode Island (+3) in the 13-team field.
The Green and Gold's second-place finish is its best in the 18 times the Patriots have participated in the annual tournament. Prior to this year, Mason's best finish was fifth place overall during the 2002-03 season. The George Mason golf team finished 9
th at the 47
th and 10th at the 46th edition of the Rutherford Intercollegiate.
Sophomore
Vaughn McMeans finished in the top 10 for the fifth time this year with a 6th place finish. He lead the Patriots with at one-under-par (70-71-71=212) at the par 71, 7,171 yard Penn State Blue Course.
Joe Johnson and JJ Powell finished t-23 in the field of 75 golfers. The sophomore transfer started his first tournament as a Patriot. Johnson was even-par in the final round after carding the best 18-hole score for George Mason with a 68 in the second round. He scored an eagle on the Par 5, hole 9. Junior JJ Powell also had his best round with a three-under-par second round.
