FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's tennis team closed out its regular season on Friday afternoon, falling to the University of Richmond, 4-0, at the Mason Tennis Complex. The day, however, was centered on celebrating seniors Maitree Diksha Rout and Avleen Waraich.
Prior to first serve, the Patriots honored Rout and Waraich in a Senior Day ceremony, recognizing their dedication, leadership, and lasting contributions to George Mason women's tennis.
Rout, a native of Odisha, India and mechanical engineering major, has been a consistent presence in the lineup throughout her career. A regular on the Dean's List and Atlantic 10 Honor Roll, she balanced academic excellence with strong performances on the court, including winning her flight at the 2023 Bedford Cup. One of her most memorable moments came when she clinched the Patriots' victory over St. Bonaventure in 2024. Rout competed at No. 1 singles in her final regular season match. Following graduation, she will begin her career as a project engineer with Baker Construction.
Waraich, a Sterling, Va. native and health administration and policy major, has been a cornerstone of the team's culture. A Dean's List student and team captain, she embraced a leadership role both on and off the court, earning the nickname "Mom" from her teammates for her constant support and presence. Whether contributing in doubles play or helping guide the team as a leader, Waraich's influence has been felt throughout the program. Her favorite memories reflect the team's close bond, highlighting moments of camaraderie that defined her experience. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in healthcare while working toward a master's degree in health administration and policy.
In Friday's match, Richmond claimed the doubles point and secured victories in singles play to clinch the match. Despite the result, the Patriots continued to compete with energy and fight, reflecting the standard set by their senior leaders.
