CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The George Mason track & field teams delivered a strong weekend of performances across two meets, competing at the Virginia Challenge (April 17–18) while a contingent from the women's team traveled to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Spring Invitational on April 18.
At the Virginia Challenge, the Patriots turned in multiple top finishes and season-best marks against a competitive field.
In the men's 1500 meters, Caleb Hymans led the way with a third-place finish in 3:47.90. The men's relay squads also impressed, highlighted by the 4x400m A team of Jayden Apenteng, Aidan Walcott, Joziah Johnson, and Jordan Tuck, which placed second with a season-best time of 3:12.07—ranking third in the Atlantic 10. The 4x100m relay team of Jalen Johnson, Jordan Edwards, Matthew Fisher, and Mason Samuels took third in 40.55, a mark that would rank first in the conference if not for their earlier season time of 40.20.
Joziah Johnson added to the team's success with a fourth-place finish in the 400m hurdles, clocking a season-best 52.08—currently second in the A-10.
In field events, Kennedy Drish placed fifth in the women's pole vault invitational (4.13m), while Kellen cleared 2.06m to finish sixth in the high jump invitational.
Several Patriots recorded personal-best performances, including Fiona Agyekum in the women's hammer throw (53.64m), which keeps her ranked fourth in the A-10 and fourth on George Mason's all-time outdoor list. On the track, Aidan Walcott ran 48.03 in the 400m (ninth in the A-10), while Mason Morales posted 14.24 in the 110m hurdles (fifth in the conference). The distance team contributed additional personal-best performances in the 1500m with Luke Brown clocking 3:55.23 and Max Vom Saal finishing in 4:04.28.
Meanwhile, in Annapolis, a select group of Patriots competed at the Navy Spring Invitational and produced several personal-best efforts.
Sophomore Abigail Graham made her debut in the 800m, finishing in 2:36.52. Miranda Pinon broke the five-minute barrier in the 1500m with a personal-best 4:57.36, while Hazel Wells recorded a personal record of 18:26.71 in the 5000m. Lindsay Meadows added a personal-best performance in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking 12:08.66.
George Mason returns to action at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., from April 23–25. The meet serves as the final tune-up before the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for May 2–3.
