Fairfax, Va. – After carding a sub-par second round the Patriots head into the final round in second place at the 49th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate. Host Penn State leads the 13-team field with a five stroke lead over George Mason.
Sophomore
Vaughn McMeans leads the Patriots with at one-under-par (71-72) at the par 71, 7,1171 yard Penn State Blue Course. The sophomore heads into tomorrow's final round tied for 10th in the 75-player field.
Transfer
Joe Johnson carded the best 18-hole score for George Mason with a 68 in the second round. He scored an eagle on the Par 5, hole 9. Junior JJ Powell is tied for 16th overall at even par, including a three-under-par second round.
Sunday's final round also featuring split tees with groups going off beginning at 8 a.m.
History at Rutherford Intercollegiate: The Patriots have participated in the annual tournament 17 times. Mason's best finish is fifth place overall during the 2002-03 season. The George Mason golf team finished 9
th at the 47
th and 10th at the 46th edition of the Rutherford Intercollegiate.
Lion Connection: Mason Head Coach
Greg Pieczynski played golf for the host Nittany Lions, where he was a captain, two-time Academic All-American. He was crowned the individual champion in the 2004 Rutherford Intercollegiate with a three-round 208 (-5).
