FAIRFAX, Va. -- A banged up Patriots women's tennis team, playing their third match in five days, defeated the visiting Greyhounds of Loyola (Md.) in a thrilling come from behind 4-3 victory on Tuesday afternoon.
Loyola came out strong in the doubles winning at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions to go up 1-0 but once the singles started, Liu evened the score with a quick 6-1, 6-2 win over the Greyhounds' No. 1 player Christine Richiez.
The visitors looked like they were going to cruise to a victory winning the first sets in two of the other opening round matches. Mary Young fell to Mia Matriccino at No. 3 and then Maya Bayat lost in a third set tiebreaker to Elana Hartley to put the home team down 1-3, only one point from the loss.
The comeback started at the No. 4 position when Noelle Talarek, after losing the first set 1-6, stormed back to win the next set 6-3 and then the tiebreaker 10-5.
With the Patriots down 2-3, the home team needed wins from their fifth and sixth positions. Brooklyn Siegel made quick work of Lily Langhus with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5.
With only one match left on the court, George Mason had evened the score at 3-3. Ravaka Noemie Ramanantoanina fell behind in the first set 3-4, but fought back to take the set 6-4. In the second set, she went down 1-3 but rolled off five games in a row to secure the come from behind victory for the Patriots.
