Patriots Power Past Mount St. Mary's

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Senior shortstop Owen Clyne and junior first baseman Matthew Westley each hit a home run in the Patriots 13-3 win in six innings at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Md.

THE LEADOFF
  • Clyne reached base three times, hit his fifth home run, drove in three runs and scored three times.
  • Westley had two hits including his third home run and drove in two runs.
  • Freshman second baseman Julius Bagnerise had two hits, two RBI and scored twice.
  • Eight players in the starting lineup drove in at least one run and scored at least one run.
George Mason (17-17, 9-6 A-10) sent 12 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on five hits against Mount St. Mary's (17-16, 10-8 MAAC) sophomore starter Owen Crow in the first inning.  Graduate student designated hitter Logan Vaughan, senior shortstop Owen Clyne and sophomore left fielder Lucas Alberti each walked to load the bases.  Graduate student center fielder Luciano Terilli drove in the first run of the game with a RBI-groundout.

After junior third baseman Jake Butler was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, Bagnerise drove in two runs with a single through the left side to make it 3-0.  With two outs, redshirt-sophomore catcher Jack McCarthy plated a pair of runs with a single through the right side to extend the advantage to 5-0.

Senior right fielder Drew Canody kept the line moving with an infield single and Vaughan knocked in a run with a single up the middle in his second at-bat of the inning to make the score 6-0.

In his second at-bat of the inning, Clyne hit his fifth home run of the season, a three-run blast over the left field fence to pad the lead to 9-0.

In the bottom of the first, the Mountaineers loaded the bases against Patriots junior starter Tanner Kaler with two walks and a hit batter, but Kaler ended the inning with a strikeout.

With two outs in the top of the second, Bagnerise doubled to right field and Westley followed with his third home run of the season off Mount St. Mary's freshman reliever Koen Bowling to make the score 11-0.

The Patriots added a run in the top of the fourth against Mountaineers junior reliever Jakob Foster.  Canody led off with a walk and scored on a two-out single by Alberti.

Mount St. Mary's got on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning off Patriots graduate student reliever Brandon Hsu.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Clyne and Alberti walked against Mountaineers senior Riley Williams.  Butler drove in a run with a two-out double down the left field line to make the score 13-1.

The Mountaineers scored their second run of the game with a two-out, RBI-double against Patriots freshman Aiden Parker in the bottom of the fifth. 

In the bottom of the sixth, Mount St. Mary's graduate student second baseman Carson Clark hit a solo home run for the Mountaineers final run of the game.

For the Patriots, Kaler gave up just one hit over 2.0 scoreless innings.  Hsu allowed one run on two hits in 2.0 innings.  Parker gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits in 2.0 innings.

Clyne went 1-for-2 with a walk, three-run home run and scored three runs.  Bagnerise was 2-for-4 with a two-run single and scored two runs.  Westley finished 2-for-3 with a two-run home run.

For the Mountaineers, Crown allowed seven runs on three hits and three walks, retired just two batters in the first and took the loss.  Bowling gave up four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.  Foster allowed one run on one hits in 2.0 innings.  Williams surrendered one run on one hits and two walks in the fifth inning. 

The Patriots return to Atlantic 10 play with a three-game road series against league-leading Saint Joesph's beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Smithson Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
