Knecht Cup Full Results
CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The George Mason University women's rowing team was bolstered by a speedy Second Varsity 8+ boat on Saturday during the Patriots' annual trip to the Knecht Cup on the waters of the Cooper River.
"Our second varsity eight was a bright spot for us on Saturday," head coach
Joseph Richards said. "The time from their heat compares favorably to some competition from within our conference. That puts them on track to meet or exceed the goals we set for that boat at the beginning of the year."
Overall on the day, the Green & Gold raced five boats in the prestigious regatta.
"It was a bit of a disappointing day for us," Richards said. "We went to this race to test ourselves against some really good competition and I think what we learned is that we have more work to do. We do have some good takeaways to bring to practice this week to help us prepare for our home invitational on Sunday."
The Second Varsity 8+ time of 7:34.19 placed the Patriots in a solid spot within the strong field of competition. The team's race included boats from Connecticut, West Virginia and Boston University.
Elsewhere, the George Mason Varsity 8+ finished fifth in its heat in a time of 7:25.88. That placed the Patriots more than 11 seconds ahead of Robert Morris.
The Patriot Varsity 4+ crossed the finish line in 9:03.74, while the Third Varsity 8+ wrapped up competition in 9:15.00. The Second Varsity 4+ finished for the Patriots in 9:34.47.
The Patriots now return home to host the annual Mason Invitational on April 19 at Sandy Run Regional Park.
