DURHAM, N.C. - After a strong opening two days at the Duke Invitational—highlighted by Abby Weening's dominant victory in the women's heptathlon—Friday, April 10 featured a full slate of action for the George Mason track & field teams. The Patriots responded with standout performances and impressive marks across the board.
Alex DeRoussel led the way on the track with a second-place finish in the men's 3000m steeplechase, recording a personal-best time of 8:57.80. His mark ranks second in the Atlantic 10 this season and moves him to second on George Mason's outdoor all-time list.
Cameron Portis delivered an impressive outing in the men's discus, setting a new personal best of 51.63m. He now ranks first in the A-10 and sixth on George Mason's outdoor all-time list.
In the women's 1500m, Kenzie Dillman posted a personal-best 4:27.25, moving into seventh on George Mason's outdoor all-time list and fifth in the A-10 this season.
The distance squad continued to shine as Sarah Clark recorded a personal best of 16:57.06 in the women's 5000m, placing third in the A-10. On the men's side, freshman Tarek Benlamkaddem ran a personal-best 14:13.42 in the 5000m, finishing second in section two and shaving more than 25 seconds off his previous time from the Raleigh Relays two weeks prior.
In the sprints, Kaela-Michelle O'Connor clocked a personal-best 13.87 in the 100m hurdles, maintaining her fourth-place standing in the A-10 and moving to fifth on George Mason's outdoor all-time list.
Several other Patriots also recorded personal bests across a variety of events, including Jayden Apenteng (14.53) in the men's 110m hurdles, Shania Staats (12.14) and Laila Thomas (12.42) in the women's 100m, Max Vom Saal (4:05.33) in the men's 1500m, and Aylin Yirmibesoglu (18:35.03) in the women's 5000m.
The Patriots will look to close out the meet on a strong note on Saturday, April 11. Action begins with the women's long jump at 11 a.m. and concludes with the men's 4x400m relay at 5 p.m.
