FARIFAX, Va. – The Patriots rallied from a four-run deficit but dropped their home opener to Georgetown, 6-5, on Friday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
THE LEADOFF
- Junior catcher Vincent Cowdrey went 4-for-4 with a walk, RBI and run scored
- Graduate student center fielder Luciano Terilli was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored a run
- Senior right fielder Drew Canody went 1-for-3 with two walks and drove in a run
Georgetown (9-5) took the lead against George Mason (5-6) redshirt-junior starter
Owen Stewart in the top of the second. The Hoyas put runners on first and second with a leadoff single and a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, and a walk loaded the bases for graduate student catcher Connor Price, who doubled in a pair of runs to put the Hoyas in front, 2-0.
In the top of the third, the Hoyas put runners on first and second with a leadoff single and a one-out walk. A throwin error moved a runner to third and Georgetown scored a run with a RBI-single to make it 3-0.
The Patriots got on the board in the home half of the fourth against Hoyas senior starter Kai Leckszas. Freshman second baseman
Julius Bagnerise led off with a single and stole second. With one out, Cowdrey drove in a run with a single to right. Cowdrey moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Canody's RBI-single up the middle to cut the Hoyas lead to 3-2.
In the fifth, Georgetown sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs on two hits and three walks against Patriots junior
Tanner Kaler and graduate student
Brandon Hsu to increase the advantage to 6-2. Hoyas sophomore right fielder Christian Hamilton had the big hit in the inning with a two-run home run.
The Patriots got a run back in the bottom of the sixth against Hoyas junior reliever Jack Volo. Junior designated hitter
Matthew Westley started the inning with a walk and Cowdrey followed with a single to left. After a sacrifice bunt, Canody walked to load the bases and senior shortstop
Owen Clyne plated a run with a groundout to make 6-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Patriots sent eight batters to the plate and scored two runs off Hoyas senior Andrew Jergins. Terilli lead off with a double to left field, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by junior first baseman
Jake Butler. Butler moved to third on a groundout and scored on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt to pull the Patriots within a run, 6-5.
With two outs, Georgetown sophomore reliever Ethan Rucker walked the bases loaded but Hoyas graduate student Luke Jackman came into the game and recorded the final out of the inning.
For the Patriots, Stewart (1-2) allowed three runs on four hits in 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and two walks and took the loss. Kaler gave up two runs and retired one batter in the fifth. Hsu was charged with one run on three hits in 1.2 innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Graduate student
Tyson Willis tossed 3.0 hitless innings with four strikeouts.
Cowdrey went 4-for-4 with a walk, RBI and run scored. Terilli was 2-for-4 with a walk and run scored. Butler finished 1-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored.
For the Hoyas, Leckszas (3-1) allowed two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings and earned the win. Jackman scattered three hits over 2.1 innings to notch his third save of the season.
The Patriots and Hoyas play the middle game of the series on Saturday at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
