FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason softball (6-9) secured a 3-1 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas (5-5) on Wednesday, March 4 at the GMU Softball Complex.
The Patriots' win over the Hoyas came in a tightly contested matchup. The game remained scoreless through the first four innings as both teams were unable to capitalize on multiple runners left on base.
Strong defensive efforts helped keep the game low-scoring. One of the key plays came in the top of the fourth inning when
Tess Altevers Harris made a line-drive catch to end the side, leaving a Georgetown runner stranded at third base.
In the fifth inning,
Logan Pickford's triple to left center set the stage for the Patriots to break the deadlock. A fielding error allowed
Tess Altevers Harris to reach first, and
Kaleigh Friend's single to left field brought in two runs, with Pickford and Altevers Harris both crossing home plate to put the Patriots ahead. The inning concluded with a 2-0 lead for the Green & Gold.
In the sixth inning,
Kamryn Inman delivered a run-saving diving catch in center field with a Georgetown runner on third. The Patriots then added to their lead as
Madeline Staats doubled down the right-field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Pickford followed with a groundout to second base, driving in Staats for another run. By the end of the sixth inning, George Mason held a 3-0 lead over Georgetown.
In the seventh inning, Georgetown's Nina Sarlo singled to center field and later scored on a groundout by Gabby Park, denying George Mason the shutout. Despite the late run, the Patriots maintained their lead and closed out the midweek matchup with a final score of 3-1 in favor of the home team.
George Mason's pitching staff showcased a strong performance against Georgetown.
Harlowe Nigh started the game, pitching 1.0 inning without allowing a hit or a run.
Abbey Lane followed with 2.0 innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 walks, but managed to keep the scoreboard clean with only 1 strikeout.
Bri Lencz secured her first career win, pitching 2.0 innings without allowing a hit, while
Alyssa Rangel earned her first career save, despite allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run over her 2.0 innings of work.
Kaleigh Friend recorded two hits and drove in two runs, contributing significantly to the team's offensive output.
Logan Pickford added a triple and collected one RBI, also scoring a run and stealing a base.
Madeline Staats hit a double, scored a run, and swiped a base, enhancing the team's momentum.
Jessica Chan was a defensive standout with five assists at shortstop, contributing to the team's fielding efforts as part of the Patriots' season-high 12 fielding assists in the game.
