FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason (15-17, 4-8 A-10) fell to the University of Dayton (15-12, 6-6 A-10) with a final score of 7-1 on Sunday, March 29 at the GMU Softball Complex. The matchup marked the finale of a three-game series. George Mason and Dayton had split Saturday's doubleheader, with Dayton winning the first game 2-0 and George Mason taking the second game 4-3. The Patriots drop the series with a 1-2 record.
The Patriots managed three hits, including a double, but were unable to overcome Dayton's 11-hit performance.
The first inning saw both teams scoring a run each. Dayton scored on a sacrifice fly, while Maddie Lemasters doubled and later scored on Elyssa DeRosa's single. The inning concluded with a 1-1 tie.
Dayton pulled ahead in the second inning, scoring two runs. Deirdre Flaherty scored on a groundout and a single up the middle brought another Flyer home. The inning ended with Dayton leading 3-1. In the fourth inning, Dayton extended its lead after another single and a sacrifice fly. Dayton finished the inning ahead 6-1. The seventh inning saw Dayton adding one more run. Izzy Calinski scored on a single to left center, solidifying Dayton's lead. The Green & Gold were unable to respond in their half of the inning, ending the game with Dayton's victory at 7-1.
Haleigh Dellow started for George Mason, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs while issuing one walk. Dellow was charged with the loss. Abbey Lane entered in relief, contributing 1.2 innings with three hits and three earned runs, alongside two walks. Bri Lencz followed with 1.1 innings, yielding one hit and no earned runs, with one walk. Harlowe Nigh closed the game, pitching 2.2 innings, surrendering four hits and one earned run, while striking out the first two batters she faced in six straight strikes.
