FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped it midweek, non-conference game to Mount St. Mary's, 9-8, on Wednesday at Spuhler Field.
THE LEADOFF
- Senior shortstop Owen Clyne had two hits with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
- Sophomore left fielder Lucas Alberti had two hits, a RBI and scored a run.
- Senior designated hitter Laken Tignor reached base four times including his first career triple, drove in two runs and scored two runs.
- Redshirt-sophomore catcher Jack McCarthy doubled in a run for his first Patriots hit and RBI.
George Mason (9-9) took the lead in the bottom of the first against Mount St. Mary's (10-8) senior starter Jackson Snyder. The Patriots sent eight batters to the plate in the inning. Clyne drove in a run with a double to left, Tignor plated two runs with a two-out triple to the wall in left and senior third baseman
Evan Blanchard singled in a run with two outs to put the Patriots in front, 4-0.
With one out in the second, senior right fielder
Drew Canody walked, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman
Julius Bagnerise to make it 5-0.
Mount St. Mary's got on the board in the top of the third with an unearned run against Patriots freshman starter
Aiden Parker.
With two outs in the Patriots fourth, junior first baseman
Jake Butler singled to start a rally against Mountaineers sophomore Kaden Kimble. Clyne reached on a wild pitch and Alberti drove in Butler from second with a single through the left side to make it 6-1.
The Mountaineers sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth and scored three runs on two hits and five walks against junior
Parker Thomas and redshirt-sophomore
Brant Ertel to cut the lead to 6-4.
In the bottom of the inning, Tignor led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. McCarthy stepped to the plate a drove a double to the gap in right-center to increase the lead to 7-4.
In the top of the eighth, Mount St. Mary's sent nine batters to the plate against graduate students
Jackson Peters and
Tyson Willis and scored five runs on four hits and two errors to take the lead, 9-7.
In the home half of the ninth, Clyne singled with one out and Alberti singled to put runners on the corners. Graduate student center fielder
Luciano Terilli then plated the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly for the 9-8 final.
For the Patriots, Parker allowed one unearned run on three hits in 3.0 innings. Thomas gave up three runs on two hits and retired two batters in the fifth. Peters was charged with three unearned runs on two hits in 2.1 innings. Willis (0-1) gave up two unearned runs on three hits in 1.2 innings and took the loss.
For the Mountaineers, Snyder allowed five runs on four hits in 3.0 innings. Kimble gave up two runs on three hits in 3.2 innings. Senior Max McCrary (4-1) retired the lone batter he faced in the seventh and earned the win. Junior closer J.B. Manarchuck worked the ninth to notch his fourth save of the season.
The Patriots are on the road for a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Rhode Island beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. in Kingston, R.I.
