WASHINGTON, D.C. - George Mason softball (11–12, 3–3 A-10) fell to George Washington (13–9, 4–2 A-10) in game three of the conference series on Sunday, March 15 at GW Softball Field, losing 9–7. The teams split a doubleheader on Saturday, giving the Revolutionaries the series victory.
The Patriots and Revolutionaries' offenses went back and forth in the competitive and exciting series finale. GW struck first with a solo home run in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, the Patriots' top of the order loaded the bases with a single by
Logan Pickford, followed by a walk and a hit by pitch.
Elyssa DeRosa reached on a fielder's choice and, aided by a GW throwing error, scored two runs to tie the game.
Kamryn Inman then homered to left field for her second career home run and first of the season, driving in herself and DeRosa to give the Patriots a 4-2 lead.
In the fourth inning,
Logan Pickford hit a solo home run to center field, extending George Mason's lead and marking her fifth of the season. However, George Washington responded with three runs of their own to tie the game at 5-5 by the end of the inning.
In the fifth, the Green & Gold scored two runs on two errors by GW to take a 7-5 lead. George Washington responded with a big rally, scoring on two two-run home runs to get ahead of the Patriots. After five innings, George Washington led 9-7, which held as the final score following scoreless sixth and seventh innings.
Abbey Lane started the game for the Patriots, pitching 1.2 innings, during which she allowed two earned runs on three hits, including a home run, while striking out three batters and walking three.
Bri Lencz came in as a reliever, pitching 2.0 innings and conceding three earned runs on five hits, with one walk and no strikeouts.
Alyssa Rangel pitched 1.0 inning and yielded four earned runs on four hits, including two home runs.
Harlowe Nigh closed the game, delivering 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit, recording a WHIP of 0.91.
George Mason returns to action on Tuesday, March 17, hosting Lafayette College for a non-conference doubleheader at the GMU Softball Complex. The opening game is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the second game set for 4:30 p.m.
