VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The George Mason track & field teams delivered a strong showing on Day One of the 2026 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, capturing multiple individual titles and producing record-breaking performances.
Fresh off breaking the indoor school record last week, Kennedy Drish capped a dominant indoor campaign by claiming the Atlantic 10 title in the women's pole vault. Drish soared to gold with a clearance of 4.20m, setting a new meet record. Teammate Marley Oare joined her on the podium, securing bronze with a strong 3.75m clearance.
The Patriots completed a sweep of the pole vault titles as reigning indoor champion Walt Bannerman claimed his third-straight A-10 gold medal. Bannerman cleared 5.05m to continue his dominance in the event. Nicholas DeWolfe added a silver medal performance, vaulting over 4.65 meters to secure valuable team points.
Shania Staats added another gold medal to the Patriots' tally with a winning performance in the women's long jump. Staats leapt 5.93m to earn 10 crucial team points. Kailynn Tyson also impressed, finishing fourth with a mark of 5.79m to add five more points to the women's total.
Later in the evening, Ella Semple etched her name into the record books once again. The distance standout delivered a commanding performance in the women's 5000m, winning gold in 16:12.74 and setting a new meet record. Semple crossed the line nearly 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, capturing another A-10 individual championship in dominant fashion.
On the men's side, Lloyd Sheppard-Brown turned in a breakthrough performance in the 5000m, finishing fourth with a personal-best time of 14:09.95. His effort not only secured key points for the Patriots but also set a new school record.
In the women's weight throw, Fiona Agyekum secured additional points with a fourth-place finish, unleashing a personal-best mark of 17.71m - nearly a full meter beyond her previous best.

"We had a very exciting Day One," said head coach Andrew Gerard. "We knew - and know - that this weekend is going to be a very challenging meet. The team scores on the women's side project to be extremely close. On the men's, we're in a close fight for second. Today though, numerous people stepped up and responded very well to the challenge, picking up unexpected points and qualifying in a lot of places. If we do what we did today, we'll be in good shape - but there's a lot of meet left to fight."
After day one, the George Mason women lead the team standings with 46 points, ahead of VCU (31) and Dayton (29). The Patriot men sit in second place with 37 points, trailing Rhode Island (61) and ahead of VCU (23).
The Patriots will conclude the 2026 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, February 28, with events beginning at 10 a.m. A complete meet schedule is linked and available online, and the live results website will provide real-time updates throughout the final day of conference competition. Day Two of competition will also be streamed on ESPN+, with additional championship information available on the 2026 A-10 ITF Championships homepage.
