CHARLESTON, S.C. – The George Mason baseball team defeated Seton Hall, 11-4, on Sunday in the Swig & Swine College Classic at Shipyard Park in Charleston, S.C.
THE LEADOFF
- Graduate student center fielder Luciano Terilli had three hits, one RBI and scored two runs.
- Junior first baseman Matthew Westley hit his first home run as a Patriot.
- Freshman second baseman Julius Bagnerise had two hits and drove in two runs.
- Graduate student starting pitcher Diego Cardenas earned his first win as a Patriot.
George Mason (2-5) took the lead against Seton Hall (3-2) senior starter John Downing in the top of the first. Senior shortstop
Owen Clyne led off with a single and with one out, Terilli singled to put runners on the corners. Junior third baseman
Jake Butler drove in a run with a groundout to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
Seton Hall tied the score in the bottom of the inning with a single, stolen base and RBI single.
After two scoreless innings, the Patriots took the lead in the fourth. With one out, Westley walked, advanced to second and scored on a single by freshman right fielder
Jackson Morse, who recorded his first collegiate RBI.
In the top of the fifth, the Patriots sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs on three hits and two walks against Pirates senior reliever Ryan Reich to take the lead for good, 5-1. Senior catcher
Vincent Cowdrey drove in a run with a single and Butler had a two-run double in the inning.
In the top of the sixth, the Patriots loaded the bases with two walks and a single off Pirates graduate student reliever Derek Benzinger. Bagnerise had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double to make the score 7-1.
Seton Hall plated a run in the bottom of the inning with a RBI groundout to get a run back.
Westley led off the seventh with a home run over the right field fence off Pirates freshman Jason Kuhn, his first home run with the Green and Gold. Terilli singled in a run and the Patriots scored another on an error to build a 10-2 advantage.
The Pirates plated a pair of runs in the home half of the inning against Patriots junior
Parker Thomas with a two-run double to make the score 10-4.
In the ninth, junior designated hitter
Toby Hueber and Cowdrey both walked against Pirates graduate student reliever Christopher Ho. Patriots pinch hitter
Drew Canody reached on a throwing error, with Hueber scoring on the play for the 11-4 final score.
For the Patriots, Cardenas (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits in 6.0 innings to earn his first win as a Patriot. Thomas gave up two runs on two hits and retired one batter. Redshirt-sophomore
Brant Ertel tossed 2.1 innings of one-hit ball to close out the game.
The Pirates used six pitchers in the game. Downing allowed two runs on five hits in 4.0 innings. Reich (0-1) surrendered four runs on three hits in 1.0 inning and took the loss. Benzinger allowed one run on two hits in 1.0 inning. Kuhn gave up three runs on three hits in 1.0 inning of work.
The Patriots are scheduled to play their home opener on Tuesday against William & Mary with the first pitch at 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
