Deniz Okyay was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and freshman
Edgar Vilain earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday.
Okyay Earns First A-10 Honor
This marks the first time the Ankara, Turkey native has received the conference accolade.
Junior
Deniz Okyay turned in a perfect 4–0 weekend, going 2–0 in singles and 2–0 in doubles as the Patriots swept Howard University 7–0 and defeated Villanova University 6–1.
Against Howard, Okyay secured a 6–4, 7–6(1) win over Michael Major Jr. at No. 1 singles. He then paired with
Shari Saeed to post a strong 6–2 victory at No. 3 doubles.
He carried that momentum into the Villanova match, battling to a 4–6, 6–3, 11–9 win over Cooper Gordon at No. 1 singles. Okyay and Saeed also collected a 7–6(3) victory at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Vilain Earns Second Career Weekly Honor
This marks the second time the Oakville, Ontario native has garnered an Atlantic 10 weekly award.
Freshman
Edgar Vilain delivered an undefeated week of his own, posting perfect marks in singles and doubles across George Mason's victories over Howard and Villanova. Vilain finished 1–0 at No. 3 singles, 1–0 at No. 5 singles, and 2–0 at No. 2 doubles.
Against Howard, he earned a commanding 6–2, 6–3 win over Marcus Weekes at No. 3 singles. In doubles play, he teamed up with
Niza Simunyola for a dominant 6–1 victory at No. 2 doubles as the Patriots completed the 7–0 sweep.
Vilain remained steady versus Villanova, defeating Kush Anand 8–6 in an 8-game pro set at No. 5 singles, played after George Mason had clinched the team result. He and Simunyola then secured a 6–3 win at No. 2 doubles to round out the Patriots' 6–1 victory.
