LYNCHBURG, Va. - The George Mason University track and field teams delivered impressive performances on Opening Day of the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational, held at Liberty University's Liberty Indoor Track Complex. The day was highlighted by two event wins and multiple personal-best marks for the Patriots.
After securing her second Atlantic 10 Women's Field Performer of the Week honor this indoor season, Kennedy Drish claimed her fourth event victory of the year as she cleared 4.25m in the women's pole vault invite section. Her winning performance was just one centimeter shy of her personal best of 4.26m, set at last week's Penn Classic. Drish remains atop the Atlantic 10 season rankings in the event and ranks 32nd nationally in Division I.
Fresh off setting a personal best in the women's mile invitational in Philadelphia, Ella Semple continues her strong indoor season in Lynchburg. Semple won the women's 3000m run invite section in 9:28.16 to register yet another personal record. Semple enters the A-10 season standings for the event in second.
Jayden Smith placed first in the preliminary round of the men's 60m hurdles in 7.81 and first again in the semifinals in 7.89. He is set to compete in the finals on Day Two of the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational alongside fellow Patriot Davian Burke, who also qualified.
Freshman Jayden Apenteng recorded a personal best of 8.30 in the preliminary round of the men's 60m hurdles in his collegiate event debut. He continued his strong showing on Opening Day of the meet by setting a personal best in the men's 400m open section with a time of 49.95, breaking the 50-second barrier.
Kaela-Michelle O'Connor set a personal best of 8.72 in the preliminary round of the women's 60m hurdles, currently tying for fifth in the conference season rankings. Freshman Sydney Rhodes (7.79) and sophomore Shania Staats (7.69) both recorded personal bests in the women's 60m dash during the preliminary round as well. Staats also surpassed her previous mark of 6.03m, set last week at the Penn Classic, by recording a collegiate-best 6.05m in the women's long jump upper section to place third at the meet. She remains third in the A-10 standings.
Freshman Kellen La Roche made his debut in the long jump for the Patriots, competing in the event's upper section. He set a personal-best mark of 7.05m, which currently ranks 11th in the conference.
George Mason's distance runners capped off the day strong for the Patriots. In the 3000m, Robbie Jenkins recorded a personal-best 8:23.51 in the men's invite section, while Abigail Graham posted a personal-best 10:58.31 in the women's open section. Up the East Coast, Biruk Beardsley represented the Green and Gold at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational, setting a personal best in the men's 5000m open section with a time of 14:23.62.
The Patriots will continue competition on Day Two of the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational on Saturday, February 14.
