FAIRFAX, Va. -- Steady play in the final round kept George Mason golf in ninth place Tuesday at the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational, hosted by West Virginia at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.
The Patriots carded a seven-over-par 295 in the final round to finish tied for ninth with Towson in the 16-team field. Mason climbed three spots during Monday's second round after posting a six-over-par 294, a 10-stroke improvement from the opening round, and maintained its position in the final round.
Mason finished ahead of Atlantic 10 opponents George Washington, which placed 12th, and Saint Joseph's, which finished 14th.
Seton Hall surged to the team title, posting the lowest final-round score of the tournament to finish atop the leaderboard. Eastern Michigan was runner-up, while host West Virginia finished third.
Sophomore Philipp Krone paced the Patriots, posting rounds of 75, 71 and 73 to finish at 3-over-par 219 and tied for 18th in the 88-player field. Krone was particularly strong on par-3 holes, averaging 3.13 strokes to tie for fifth in the tournament.
Senior Vijay "JJ" Powell saved his best round for the final day, firing a 2-under-par 70 to finish at 4-over-par 220 and tied for 21st. Powell's 70 marked his second consecutive tournament with a sub-par round after winning the Duke Rod Myers Invitational last month for his first collegiate victory. He lead the field in pars with 39.
Putter Aukrawat also posted his best round of the tournament Tuesday, carding a 2-over-par 74 to finish tied for 53rd at 10-over-par 226.
The Patriots will return to action next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 12-13, at the Moraine Classic in Kettering, Ohio, hosted by Miami University (Ohio).
