The George Mason women's tennis team hosted their fall invitational this weekend, which was a round-robin style tournament with George Mason, George Washington, Delaware State, and Mount St. Mary's each competing.
On Saturday, Mason hosted George Washington, with the visitors winning the majority of the matches. The highlight for the Patriots was freshman Rowan Scronce defeating George Washington's Madison Lee, 6-3, 6-3.
Later in the day, Mason played against Mount St. Mary's. The two teams battled for several hours, splitting the twelve matches they played against one another evenly, 6-6. Mason opened the scoring, winning three of the four doubles matchups. The teams of Brooklyn Siegel and Mary Young, Izzy Rotaru and Rowan Scronce, and Maya Bayat and Gray Feaster all defeated their Mount St. Mary's opponents.
The singles matches would continue later into the night on Saturday as well. Lakshya Motam defeated Mount St. Mary's Emma Kaden, 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Marianna Pirmatova defeated Venus Tang, also from Mount St. Mary's, 6-4, 7-6 (5) for her first singles victory of her collegiate career. Gray Feaster defeated Mount St. Mary's Anya Rosenbach as well, 7-5, 6-2.
Mason's last two matches of the evening both went into third-set tiebreakers. Rowan Scronce fell to Emma Perkins from Mount St. Mary's, 2-6, 6-0, 7-10. Izzy Rotaru lost a close battle to Mount St. Mary's Eirini Tsakari, 6-2, 3-6, 8-10.
"I was very pleased with the fight and resilience this team showed today", commented head coach Steve Curtis. "It is hard playing the first and last match of the day in an event like this. We have had some injuries but came out and played solid tennis."
Due to inclement weather, the matches scheduled on Sunday were canceled.
Next, selected Patriots will head to Liberty University to compete in the ITA Regionals competition, which will be held from Thursday, October 15, to Monday, October 19.
