FARMINGTON, Pa. – George Mason sophomore
Vaughn McMeans etched his name into the Patriots record book earning his first collegiate tournament victory at the
second annual Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational at Mystic Rock Golf Course.
McMeans shot rounds of 71-67-67=205 to finish 11-under-par and earn co-medalist honors with defending champion Kaleb Wilson from West Virginia. The sophomore entered Tuesday's final round two strokes behind Wilson but McMeans delivered a composed performance down the stretch, earning three birdies in the final four holes.
The 54-hole score marks one of the best showings in Mason golf history as the third lowest score relative to par ever recorded by an individual Patriot behind Mike Kirby (-16) and
Samir Davidov (-12).
David Fuhrer added consistency with rounds of (72-71-74) finishing the tournament at 1-over-par (217) tied for 31st. The sophomore eagled the Par 5 Hole #8 in the second round, his fourth eagle on the season.
As a team, George Mason placed ninth out of 19 teams in a strong field and ahead of three conference opponents, GW, VCU, and Davidson. A-10 foe Richmond finish eighth, two strokes ahead of the Patriots.
George Mason travels to Florida for the FGCU The Island at West Bay Collegiate, October 6-7.
