College Park, Md. – The George Mason women's tennis team continued its Fall season at the Bedford Cup, reaching two Flight championship matches due to outstanding performances from
Cenan Liu and
Maya Bayat.
The annual tournament featured four singles and 2 doubles flights. The Patriots competed against student-athletes from nine teams on the University of Maryland Campus.
Cenan Liu continued her fall season with a Flight 1 West group championship win. She ended the tournament with a 3-1 singles record. The junior lost her first match against Sofia Jane Thorne from VCU, 6-1, 6-3 in the East group, before winning three straight matches. In the West quarterfinals, she defeated GW's Victoria Sasinka, 0-6, 6-2, 10-8, and won the semifinals match 6(3)-7(7), 6-4, 10-6, against Damla Arslan from Morgan State. In the finals, she defeated Madison Lee from GW 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore
Maya Bayat completed the tournament with a 2-1 record, reaching the Flight 2 East group finals. In the R16, she defeated GW's Karen Verduzco 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 and Claire Loftus from Johns Hopkins 7-5, 7-5 in the quarterfinals before losing to West Virginia's Julie Bousseau 6-0, 6-1.
Junior
Mary Young teamed up with
Cenan Liu to earn a 2-1 record in Flight 1 doubles play. In the R16, the Patriots defeated VCU's Sofia Jane Thorne and Viktoria Lackova 6-4. The pair then finished the quarterfinal match with a 6-3 win over Elena Prado and Yuliya Yurkova from Norfolk State before suffering a 2-6 loss to Loyola (MD)'s Christine Richiez and Emma Roeck.
