FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University men's golf was well represented on the national and international amateur golf stage this summer, with standout performances from current Patriots
David Fuhrer II and
Vaughn McMeans, incoming freshman Phillip Krone, and alumnus
Nikita Gubenko.
Fuhrer, rising sophomore, claimed the 125th WPGA Amateur Championship at Sunnehanna Country Club (July 13-15), finishing 8-under-par over 54 holes. He birdied the final hole to break a three-way tie atop the leaderboard and earn his first West Penn major title.
McMeans, also a rising sophomore, enjoyed a strong summer campaign. He placed third at the Kenridge Invitational at Farmington Country Club with rounds of 68-71-67. He also finished third at the Northern Virginia Amateur at Evergreen Country Club and placed 17th at the State Open of Virginia (68-70-72). McMeans earned medalist honors in VSGA Amateur and State Open qualifying by firing a 67 at Laurel Hill Golf Club.
Krone, an incoming freshman from England, captured the prestigious Peter Alliss Trophy, one of Europe's top amateur titles. He posted a 13-under-par total (69-67-67) at Beaconsfield Golf Club in Buckinghamshire, England.
Gubenko, a 2024 graduate, turned in one of the summer's most impressive performances at the Porter Cup in Niagara Falls, N.Y., held July 16-19. The Great Falls native finished fourth overall with a 2-under-par score over 72 holes. Gubenko also recorded the tournament's low round with a dazzling 8-under 62 on day one—further cementing his status as one of George Mason's top golf alumni.
