Second-seeded Patriots Rout Saint Louis to Advance to Atlantic 10 Title Game

TYSONS, Va. – George Mason junior starter Logan Rumberg tossed five strong innings and the second-seeded Patriots collected 19 hits, eight for extra bases, in a 16-2 win over third-seeded Saint Louis on Friday evening to advance to the Atlantic 10 tournament championship game.

The Patriots will face top-seeded Rhode Island on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for noon at Capital One Park.

THE LEADOFF
  • Rumberg tied his season high with 5.0 innings of work, the longest outing he's had in the postseason and earned his second win of the tournament.
  • Sophomore right fielder Owen Hull and junior center fielder James Quinn-Irons each had three hits, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Freshman left fielder Lucas Alberti had three hits, reached base five times and drove in a run.
  • Freshman catcher Andrew Raymond had three hits, two RBI and scored a run.
  • The Patriots have hit four home runs in the tournament, two by Quinn-Irons and one each by sophomore third baseman Jake Butler and Hull.
  • Six players had a multi-hit games and six players drove in at least two runs in the game.
  • The Patriots have scored 44 runs in the first four games of the tournament.
  • George Mason has set the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship record with 18 stolen bases.
George Mason (40-20, 20-10 A-10) sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on nine hits in the first inning against Saint Louis (33-26, 18-12 A-10) sophomore starter Stephen Hernandez and graduate student Chase Minor.

Hull singled and scored a run, and hit a two-run home run, his eighth homer of the season, in his second trip to the plate in the inning.  Quinn-Irons had two doubles in the inning, drove in a run and scored a run.  Junior shortstop Owen Clyne had a two-run double, while junior designated hitter Drew Canody and Alberti each knocked in a run with a double as the Patriots built a 9-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Patriots added three more runs against Saint Louis junior Justin Lee.  Alberti led off with a double and with one out, graduate student first baseman Jonny Wall walked.  Raymond then plated a run with a single through the right side to make it 10-0.  With two outs, Clyne ripped a two-run single to right field to increase the advantage to 12-0.

Quinn-Irons led off the bottom of the third with a towering home run to center field, his second home run of the tournament, to pad the lead to 13-0.  After singles by Butler and Alberti, Wall knocked in a run with a single to right field to make the score 14-0

The Patriots tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Raymond and Canody to make it 16-0.

In the top of the sixth, the Billikens sent eight batters to the plate and scored a run with a RBI-double and another with a sacrifice fly for their only runs of the game.

For the Patriots, Rumberg (5-3) allowed two runs on six hits over 5.0 innings and earned the win in the longest outing in an A-10 tournament game in his career.  Rumberg tied his season high with seven strikeouts.  

Sophomore Shaun Okeeffe and Cole Egan, and freshmen Jake Drumm and Michael Bilo each tossed 1.0 scoreless inning.  Drum and Egan each notched a pair of strikeouts.

For the Billikens, Hernandez (3-4) allowed four runs on three hits, retired one batter and took the loss.  Minor gave up five runs on six hits and retired two batters in his outing.  Lee surrendered seven runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings.  Junior Carter Kelsey pitched 3.0 innings of one-hit ball.

The No. 2 Patriots face No. 1 Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 championship game on Saturday at noon with the first pitch scheduled for noon at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
