Patriots Beat Flyers in Opening Round of Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship

TYSONS, Va. – The second-seeded George Mason Patriots beat the seventh-seeded Dayton Flyers, 9-5 in the opening round of the 2025 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
 
Junior Brandon Cassedy started on the mound today, pitching 7.0 innings. He walked two batters and recorded four strikeouts. Gardner Meeks came in as the relief in the top of the eighth and pitched 2.0 innings. He recorded one strikeout.

The Patriots got four early runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning off six hits. With two runners on base, Jake Butler hit his first single of the day to left center, scoring two.
 
Andrew Raymond singled, scoring another run, and Sam Lavin singled through the right side, giving the Patriots the 4-0 lead.
 
The Flyers brought the game within one in the top of the fifth off a two-run home run by Dyrenson Wouters and a solo home run by Michael DiMartini.
 
Owen Hull extended the George Mason lead 6-3 with a triple down the right field line, scoring two in the bottom of the seventh. Jake  Butler kept the bats going with a single to shortstop, scoring one run (7-3).

In the top of the eighth, the Flyers Macdougall hit a two-run home run to make it a two run game with the Patriots still up 7-5.

Jonny Wall started things off in the bottom of the eighth with a single. Owen Hull followed with another single scoring a run for George Mason, making it 8-5. Jake Butler hit a sacrifice fly to score Quinn-Irons, extending the lead to 9-5.
 
Butler recorded two hits, four RBI, and one run, Hull recorded three hits three runs and three RBI, and Clyne recorded two hits and three runs

As a team, the Patriots recorded 12 hits compared to the Flyers' six, and six stolen bases

For the Flyers, pitcher Peguero pitched 6.0 innings, giving up seven runs. He walked one and recorded six strikeouts. Lapalm came in to pitch and pitched 1.0 inning, recording two walks and two strikeouts. Rondeau also pitched 1.0 inning and gave up two runs. He recorded one strikeout.
 
The Patriots face No. 3 Saint Louis on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Capital One Park.
