FAIRFAX, Va. – The Patriots swept a doubleheader from Saint Louis with a 7-2 win in game one and an 8-6 walk-off victory in 10 innings in the nightcap to complete the sweep of the three-game series at Spuhler Field.
In game two, sophomore right fielder
Owen Hull hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning for the Patriots.
The Patriots swept a three-game series from the Billikens for the first time in program history. The teams first met during the 2014 season when George Mason joined the Atlantic 10 Conference.
THE LEADOFF
- Junior starter Brandon Cassedy took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and allowed just two hits in 8.0 innings in game two.
- Graduate student starter Connor O'Hara allowed one earned run and struck out five over 7.2 innings of work in game one.
- Hull went 7-for-8 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored over the two games.
- Junior shortstop Owen Clyne was 4-for-10 with three RBI and two runs scored over the two games.
- The Patriots have hit 10 home runs in their last 10 games.
GAME ONE
George Mason (19-12, 7-4 A-10) took the lead against Saint Louis (16-14, 6-5 A-10) freshman starter Christian Pownall in the bottom of the third. Clyne led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. Quinn-Irons followed with a RBI-double to right field to put the Patriots in front, 1-0. He extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Jake Butler plated a run with a sacrifice bunt to increase the lead to 2-0.
Saint Louis got on the board in the top of the fourth with an unearned run to make it a one-run game at 2-1.
The Patriots responded in the home half of the fourth. With one out, junior third baseman
Evan Blanchard drew a walk and graduate student first baseman
Jonny Wall doubled to left-center field to put runners on second and third. Graduate student designated hitter
Nick Barenz plated a run with a groundout to extend the advantage to 3-1.
George Mason added a run in the bottom of the seventh against Saint Louis freshman reliever Ty Holman. Wall reached on a fielding error to start the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two out, Quinn-Irons knocked in a run with a single to make it a 4-1 game.
Saint Louis scored its final run of the game in the top of the eighth when sophomore first baseman Riley Iffrig singled in a run with two out.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs against Holman and junior reliever Justin Lee. Sophomore right fielder
Owen Hull, Barenz and Clyne each had RBI singles in the inning for the 7-2 final score.
For the Patriots, O'Hara (4-2) gave up just one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk to earn his fourth win. Graduate student
Daniel Elliott worked 1.1 hitless innings and picked up his second save of the season.
For the Billikens, Pownall (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings and took the loss. Holman surrendered four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.
GAME TWO
George Mason (20-12, 8-4 A-10) took the lead against Saint Louis (16-15, 6-6 A-10) sophomore starter Josh Cunningham in the bottom of the second.
Freshman left fielder
Lucas Alberti led off with a double to left field and with one out, Blanchard doubled to right-center to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
George Mason loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third. Hull singled, Quinn-Irons was hit by a pitch and Butler walked, but the Patriots were unable to push a run across.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Patriots added to the lead against Saint Louis junior reliever Charlie Weber. Blanchard singled and Wall reached base on a fielder's choice to put two runners aboard. After a sacrifice bunt by graduate student designated hitter
Sam Lavin moved the runners into scoring position, Clyne ripped a two-run single into left field to make the score 3-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots tacked on an important insurance run against Saint Louis graduate student reliever Chase Minor. With two out, Wall doubled to left and Lavin followed with a double to right to make it 4-0.
In the ninth, the Billikens sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs against to take the lead. Saint Louis junior right fielder Max McGwire hit a three-run home run to center field to cut the lead to 4-3, junior shortstop Austin Neuweg drove in two runs with a single to vault the Billikens in front 5-4 and junior third baseman Ian Blazier plated another with a sacrifice fly off Patriots senior reliever
Britt Yount to make it 6-4.
The Patriots rallied to even the score in the home half of the ninth against Billikens senior reliever Jack Weber and sophomore Stephen Hernandez.
Hull led off with a double to the wall in left field and Quinn-Irons reached on a fielding error to put runners on second and third. Butler stepped to the plate and tied the game 6-6 with a single through the left side.
With one out in the 10th inning, Clyne walked and Hull belted a two-run home run over the right field fence for the 8-6 walk-off victory.
For the Patriots, Cassidy was charged with one run on two hits in 8.0 innings. Freshman
Jake Drumm allowed two runs on two hits and retired one batter. Sophomore
Shaun Okeeffe gave up one run on one hit in the ninth. Graduate student
Gardner Meeks surrendered two runs on three hits in the ninth. Yount (1-2) tossed 1.2 hitless innings and earned the win.
For the Billikens, Cunningham allowed one run on four hits in 2.1 innings. Hernandez (1-2) gave up two runs on one hit in 1.1 innings and took the loss.
Hull went 5-for-5 with a two-run home run and two runs scored. Clyne went 2-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs. Blanchard finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Butler drove in two runs.
The Patriots are on the road for a midweek matchup against Towson on Tuesday, April 8, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. in Towson, Md.
