BALTIMORE, Md. – The George Mason University rowing team showed significant improvement week over week during Saturday's tri-regatta vs. Loyola (Md.) and Monmouth at the Baltimore Rowing & Water Resource Center.
The Patriots raced a Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Second Varsity 4+ boat on the Patapsco River.
"We had some close races today," head coach
Joseph Richards said. "All of our crews were closer to Loyola today than we were when we raced them two weeks ago. That shows we're making progress."
The Patriot Second Varsity 4+ boat raced well on Saturday while finishing in 9:05.70, just 16 seconds behind the host Greyhounds. In addition, the Varsity 4+ placed third in its race in 9:04.40.
The Second Varsity 8+ showed the greatest improvement Saturday, finishing in 8:04.50, just three seconds behind the Greyhounds. That's a significant jump based on the results at April 13's Mason Invitational.
Rounding out the George Mason racing, the Varsity 8+ put together a strong time of 7:28.50 to finish third in its race.
"The student-athletes in our Second Varsity 4+ have been working hard and making good improvements at practice. I think that showed today," Richards said. "Our Second Varsity 8+ also was just three seconds off of Loyola after trailing them by around 45 seconds at our Invitational. There are good things happening across our program. We're looking forward to putting the finishing touches on the regular season and getting ready for our championship races."
The Patriots now take a competitive weekend off before returning to action at the famed Dad Vail Regatta May 9-10 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
