Patriots Set NCAA Record for Most Runs in an Inning

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Patriots broke the NCAA Division I record for runs in an inning, scoring 23 times in the bottom of the second in a 26-6 win over Holy Cross in seven innings on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

The previous Division I record for most runs in an inning had stood for nearly 42 years.  The record of 21 runs in an inning was set by the University of Pennsylvania in 1983 and again by Wichita State in 1984.

In the inning, 19 consecutive batters reached base.  The Patriots had 11 hits (six singles and five doubles), eight walks and five hit batters.

George Mason won seven games on its season-high, eight game homestand.  The Patriots extended their winning streak to six games and have outscored their opponents by a combined 89-27 in those contests.

The Patriots all-time team record for runs in a game is 36, also set against Holy Cross March 6, 1996.

THE LEADOFF

Freshman left fielder Lucas Alberti, junior center fielder James Quinn-Irons and sophomore designated hitter Owen Hull each drove in four runs.

Sophomore starter Ty Uchman pitched 2.0 hitless innings and earned his first career win.

The Patriots had 13 hits and walked 12 times in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

George Mason (8-4) sent 28 batters to the plate and scored a NCAA record 23 runs in the second inning against five Holy Cross (5-5) pitchers. 

In the record-breaking inning, freshman catcher Andrew Raymond doubled, walked, drove in three runs and scored three runs.  Junior shortstop Owen Clyne doubled, walked, drove in a run and scored twice.  Graduate student first baseman Jonny Wall singled, walked twice, drove in a run and scored three runs.  Junior third baseman Evan Blanchard had two hits with a double and single, was hit by a pitch, drove in a run and scored three runs.  Junior right fielder Drew Canody singled, walked, was hit by a pitch, drove in two runs and scored two runs.  Freshman left fielder Lucas Alberti doubled, walked twice, drove in three runs and scored three runs.  Sophomore designated hitter Owen Hull had two hits with a double and single, walked, drove in four runs and scored twice.  Junior center fielder James Quinn-Irons had two singles, was hit by a pitch, drove in three runs and scored two runs.  Sophomore second baseman Jake Butler, who started and ended the inning, was hit by a pitch twice and scored two runs.

The Patriots added three runs in the fifth.  Quinn-Irons doubled in a run, freshman pinch runner Tripp Capers scored his first run as a Patriot on a wild pitch and Clyne knocked in a run with a ground out.

George Mason will play its next three games at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.  The Patriots face Georgetown on Friday, March 7 (noon), Longwood, Saturday, March 8 (4 p.m.) and Towson Sunday, March 9 (4 p.m.)
