ARLINGTON, Va. – The Patriots took the two-run lead into the ninth but fell to George Washington, 4-3, in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.
THE LEADOFF
- Sophomore third baseman Jake Butler hit his third home run of the season.
- The Patriots have hit seven home runs in their last five games and 13 over the last 12 contests.
George Mason (16-10, 4-3 A-10) graduate student starter
Sam Lavin and George Washington (14-11, 4-3 A-10) graduate student starter Michael Foltz kept the game scoreless through the first five innings.
With one out in the top of the sixth, freshman left fielder
Lucas Alberti and sophomore designated hitter
Owen Hull drew back-to-back walk. Both runners advanced into scoring position with stolen bases on a strikeout. With two out, Butler smashed his third home run of the season, a three-run blast over the left-center field fence to put the Patriots in front, 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, George Washington scored a run on a RBI-double by sophomore catcher Robbie Lavey to make it a 3-1 game.
Patriots graduate student reliever
Daniel Elliott took over in the eighth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. He struck out the first two Revolutionaries batters in the ninth but George Washington put a pair of runners on base with a single and hit by pitch. Senior third baseman Ty Acker then hit a three-run home run to right-center to vault the Revolutionaries to a 4-3 walk-off win.
For the Patriots, Lavin gave up one run on five hits in 7.0 innings in his longest outing of the season. He retired 14 of the first 19 batters he faced in the game. Elliott (2-1) surrendered three runs on two hits and took the loss.
For George Washington, Foltz allowed three runs on four hits in 6.0 innings. Sophomore Andrew Cutler (4-0) tossed three shutout innings to earn the win.
Junior shortstop Owen Cyne went 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Butler was 1-for-3 with his third home run and is second on the team with 38 RBI.
The Patriots and Revolutionaries play the middle game of the series on Saturday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.
