FAIRFAX, Va. - Despite a valiant effort on their home turf, George Mason fell to Davidson 18-2 in a tough conference matchup on Wednesday evening.
The first quarter saw George Mason keeping pace with Davidson, with Trippel and Anders each finding the back of the net, but Davidson's late goal gave them a 3-2 edge.
The second quarter, however, proved to be the turning point, as the Wildcats erupted for seven unanswered goals, capitalizing on turnovers and man-up opportunities. The Patriots struggled to generate offensive chances, recording just five shots in the period while Davidson controlled possession.
The third quarter saw much of the same, with the Patriots battling on defense but unable to stop Davidson's offensive rhythm, as the Wildcats added five more goals. George Mason's offense was stifled, managing only four shots in the frame.
By the fourth quarter, the game was out of reach, yet the Patriots continued to fight. Despite Davidson tacking on three more goals, George Mason showed resilience in the ground ball and draw control battles.
