COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The George Mason baseball team dropped its midweek game at Maryland, 15-8, on Tuesday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium in College Park, Md.
THE LEADOFF
- Junior outfielder James Quinn-Irons had two hits including his seventh home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
- Freshman designated hitter Andrew Raymond had three hits, reached base four times and scored three runs.
- Junior shortstop Owen Clyne finished with two hits with a double and three RBI.
- Sophomore first baseman Owen Hull had three hits and scored a pair of runs.
George Mason (16-9, 4-2 A-10) took the lead against Maryland (13-12, 2-4 Big Ten) sophomore starter Brayden Ryan and sophomore reliever Andrew Koshy in the first inning. The first seven batters of the game reached base for the Patriots.
Sophomore second baseman
Toby Hueber and Hull each singled to put runners on the corners. Quinn-Irons then drove in a run with a single through the right side and Hull scored on the throw into second base to put the Patriots in front, 2-0. Raymond and freshman left fielder
Lucas Alberti each singled to put runners on the corners. Clyne then knocked in two runs with a double to right-center to increase the lead to 4-0.
With two outs in the top of the second, Hull walked and Quinn-Irons followed with his seventh home run of the season, a blast to left-center to make it 6-0.
In the bottom of the second, Maryland sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs on five hits against Patriots freshman starter
Jake Drumm to cut the lead to 6-4.
The Terrapins turned a leadoff walk into a run in the home half of the third against Patriots graduate student
Gardner Meeks to make it a one-run game, 6-5.
George Mason got the run back in the top of the fifth. With one out, Raymond singled to second base and with two outs, Clyne drove in his third run of the game to build the lead to 7-5.
In the top of the seventh, Quinn-Irons was hit by a pitch to start the inning and sophomore third baseman
Jake Butler dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move him into scoring position. After Raymond walked, Alberti singled to the shortstop with Quinn-Irons scoring on the play to make it 8-5.
Maryland scored a run in the seventh inning and in the eighth inning, the Terrapins sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on seven hits against three Patriots pitchers for the 15-8 final score.
The Patriots used seven pitchers in the game. Drumm allowed four runs on five hits in 2.0 innings in his first career start. Senior
Britt Yount (0-1) gave up four runs on three hits in the eighth and took the loss.
For the Terrapins, Ryan allowed three runs on four runs and retired two batters in the first inning. Senior Andrew Johnson (1-1) gave up one run on two hits in 3.0 innings and earned the win.
Quinn-Irons went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Clyne was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Hull and Raymond each went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
The Patriots return to Atlantic 10 play with a three-game series at George Washington beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
