Fairfax, Va. -- The George Mason men's golf team is positioned in the top half of the pack after the first round was completed today at the UC San Diego Invitational, played at Torrey Pines Golf Course. 

George Mason freshman Vaughn McMeans shot an even-par 72 on the difficult and lengthy Par 72, 7,802-yard Torrey Pines South Course today to lead the Patriots in the first round of the three-round tournament. The Leesburg, Va. native recorded six birdies today, three on each nine to help the Patriots stand ted for sixth place in the 20-team field. The Patriots (+6) are tied with host UC San Diego.

McMeans is one stroke back of the three leaders in the clubhouse at one-under-par 71. 

Another Patriot freshman Uzair Mirza contributed with a 77(+5) to stand t-31 out of 111 golfers.

Coming off medalist honors at the Donald Ross Collegiate last week, Samir Davidov could only sink one birdie to finish with a 78(+6) today. Sophomore JJ Powell is one stroke back of teammate Davidov heading into tomorrow's second round.

ABOUT THE TORREY PINES SOUTH COURSE
The Torrey Pines South Course is the more challenging of the two and hosted of the 2008 & 2021 U.S. Open Championships. The South course was originally designed by William Bell, Sr. in 1957, and is home to the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Golf Tournament (along with the North Course). In 2001 and again in 2019, Torrey Pines South Course was renovated and redesigned by Rees Jones. With the most recent renovations, Torrey Pines South is longer and plays more difficult, with the South's teeing areas extending the length of this course to up to 7,800 yards. Golfers must also deal with the distractive view of hang-gliders and para-gliders, soaring and hovering at the edge of the cliffs on the south end of the course.
