Fairfax, Va. -- The Mason women's tennis team hosted Atlantic 10 power Fordham in their first outdoor match of the spring season. The Patriots fell 0-4 to the Rams on the blustery day.
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point. The highlight for the Patriots was
Mary Young and
Brooklyn Siegel took the match to a tiebreaker at #2 doubles before falling to the Rams team of Paola Dalmonicao/Catalina Padilla.
In singles action Mason battled both the Fordham opponent as well as wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour at times. The Rams won at # 3, #6 and # 1 to secure the victory. In the matches that did not finish
Maya Bayat was leading Paola Dalmonicao, 6-4, 4-1 when the match was clinched.
Lauren Splett lost the first set but had pulled even in the second set and
Mary Young was in a tough match at #2.
"This was our first outdoor match and overall I think we played well," said Head Coach Steve Curtis. "The wind presented a challenge but I was pleased with how we handled it and fought against one of the top teams in the A-10."
The Patriots will be headed to South Carolina on March 8th to play in the PTR SpringFest in Hilton Head. Mason is slated to play matches against Western Illinois, SIUE, Grace College and West VA State. Their next home match will be March 21st as they host Longwood in a double dual with the men's team.
