FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball team travel to Charlottesville for a match up against the No. 23 Virginia Cavaliers March 18th, at 5:00 p.m.
 

A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS
The Patriots had their first series of conference play this past weekend against Rhode Island. On Friday, George Mason played a doubleheader and won the first game 8-6 but then dropped the second game 5-7, in a 10-inning game.
 
With the series tied 1-1, the Patriots fought hard to win the series. Kylie Wilkerson stepped in the circle and pitched a complete game and earned a shutout. She gave up three hits, zero errors, three walks, and a new season high of five strikeouts to help the team win 4-0.
 
Currently, the Patriots are ranked first in the Atlantic 10 conference for stolen bases per game (2.04) and runs batted in (97). They also rank first in the conference for triples (11), ranking them 13th nationally.
 
Elyssa DeRosa is ranked first in the conference and fourth in the country for triples (5) and is ranked second in the conference for triples per game (0.19). Kamryn Inman is ranked sixth in the A-10 in stolen bases (9) and Maddy Johnson is ranked ninth with (8). Abbey Lane is ranked fifth in the conference for complete games (4) and second for saves (2), which ranks her 31st in the nation.
 
 
RHODE ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Maya McGowan led the team with a .429 batting average. (3 H, 1 R, 1 RBI)
  • Elyssa DeRosa hit her fifth triple of the season (4 H, 4 R, 2 RBIs)
  • Logan Pickford hit a home run (4 H, 2 R, 2 RBIs)
  • Tess Altevers Harris hit her first career home run (3 H, 2 R, 5 RBIs)
  • Madi Sobota hit two home runs including an inside-the-park home run (2 H, 4 R, 5 RBIs)
  • Kylie Wilkerson improved to 2-3 through the weekend she gave up eight hits, three runs, two errors, and had seven strikeouts
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
 
University of Virginia
2025 record: 21-7, 4-2 ACC
This season, Rhode Island sits at 21-7 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers are on a five-game win streak after playing a three-game series against Boston College, beating JMU 6-0, and beating VT 9-2.


Bella Cabral leads the Cavaliers with a .400 average. She has 32 hits, 14 runs, and 23 RBIs. She leads the ACC in assists (59), ranks fourth in doubles (9), and 17th for home runs (5). Jade Hylton is second on the team with a .349 average. She has 30 hits, 30 runs, and 24 RBIs. She ranks second in the ACC and fourth in the country in triples (5), and ranks sixth in the conference for runs (27)
 
Pitcher Savanah Henley is ranked 6th in the conference for appearances (15), ninth for strikeouts (52) and saves (1). Eden Bigham ranks first in the ACC and third in the nation for saves (4). She is also ranked 10th in the conference for shutouts (1)
 
In the all-time series, the Patriots are 1-13 against the Cavaliers. These two teams last met in March of 2023 in Charlottesville, where Virginia pulled away with a 2-1 win.


UP NEXT
The Patriots travel to Olean, New York this weekend for a three-game conference series against St. Bonaventure. There is a doubleheader March 22nd starting at noon and 2:30 p.m., then Sunday March 23rd is a single game starting at noon.
