FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the second game of its series at Duke, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field in Durham, N.C.
THE LEADOFF
- Sophomore infielder Toby Hueber hit his first NCAA home run.
- Junior shortstop Owen Clyne had two hits with a triple and home run and scored two runs.
Duke (12-6) took the lead against George Mason (11-6) senior reliever
Britt Yount in the bottom of the third with a solo home run and RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Patriots responded in the top of the fourth against Blue Devils graduate student reliever Ryan Calvert. Hueber led off the inning with his first career home run, a blast to left-center to make it a one-run game. Junior shortstop
Owen Clyne followed with his first triple of the season and with one out, freshman catcher
Andrew Raymond singled in a run to tie the score, 2-2.
In the home half of the fourth, Duke sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs on two hits and three walks against George Mason freshman
Michael Madigan to take a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, freshman left fielder
Lucas Alberti, sophomore right fielder
Owen Hull and junior center fielder
James Quinn-Irons each walked to start the inning, but the Patriots were unable to score.
The Blue Devils added a run on a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth for the 6-3 final score.
For the Patriots, graduate student
Connor O'Hara pitched the first inning in his fifth start of the season. Freshman
Jake Drumm struck out two batters in a scoreless second inning. Yount allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits in the third. Madigan (0-2) surrendered three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings and took the loss. Graduate student
Gardner Meeks allowed one run over the final 3.0 innings of the game.
Duke used nine pitchers in the game. For the Blue Devils, graduate student starter Gavin Brown gave up one hit in 1.2 innings. Calvert allowed two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Freshman Max Stammel surrendered a home run in the eighth inning. Junior Edward Hart (1-0) retired two batters in the fourth inning and earned the win.
The Patriots return home to begin Atlantic 10 play with a three-game series against Dayton beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
