THE LEADOFF
  • Sophomore infielder Toby Hueber hit his first NCAA home run.

Duke (12-6) took the lead against George Mason (11-6) senior reliever Britt Yount in the bottom of the third with a solo home run and RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Patriots responded in the top of the fourth against Blue Devils graduate student reliever Ryan Calvert.  Hueber led off the inning with his first career home run, a blast to left-center to make it a one-run game.  Junior shortstop Owen Clyne followed with his first triple of the season and with one out, freshman catcher Andrew Raymond singled in a run to tie the score, 2-2.

In the home half of the fourth, Duke sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs on two hits and three walks against George Mason freshman Michael Madigan to take a 5-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth, freshman left fielder Lucas Alberti, sophomore right fielder Owen Hull and junior center fielder James Quinn-Irons each walked to start the inning, but the Patriots were unable to score.

The Blue Devils added a run on a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth for the 6-3 final score.

For the Patriots, graduate student Connor O'Hara pitched the first inning in his fifth start of the season.  Freshman Jake Drumm struck out two batters in a scoreless second inning.  Yount allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits in the third.  Madigan (0-2) surrendered three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings and took the loss.  Graduate student Gardner Meeks allowed one run over the final 3.0 innings of the game.

Duke used nine pitchers in the game.  For the Blue Devils, graduate student starter Gavin Brown gave up one hit in 1.2 innings.  Calvert allowed two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.  Freshman Max Stammel surrendered a home run in the eighth inning.  Junior Edward Hart (1-0) retired two batters in the fourth inning and earned the win.
