FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the first of a two-game series to Duke, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field in Durham, N.C.

THE LEADOFF
  • Sophomore designated hitter Owen Hull hit his first career home run.
  • Graduate student Daniel Elliott allowed just one hit and struck out three over 3.2 innings.
Duke (11-6) took the lead against George Mason (11-5) sophomore starter Ty Uchman in the bottom of the first.  The Blue Devils loaded the bases with a hit batter and two walks and scored runs on a sacrifice fly, a single and double steal to make it 3-0.

With one out in the bottom of the second, the Blue Devils added a pair of runs against George Mason graduate student Gardner Meeks with a two-run single to increase the lead to 5-0.

The Patriots dented the scoreboard in the top of the third against Duke starter Aidan Weaver.  Junior right fielder Drew Canody grounded into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning, then freshman left fielder Lucas Alberti reached on a wild pitch on a third strike, with Canody racing home for the first run of the game.

Hull stepped to the plate and belted his first career home run, a two-run shot over the left field fence to cut the Dukes lead to 5-3.

George Mason graduate student reliever Daniel Elliott entered the game in the third and retired the first 10 batters he faced in the outing.

The Blue Devils added a run in the eighth on a hit batter and a pair of singles against Patriots sophomore Cole Egan to make the score 6-3.

Three Duke relievers combined to retire 19 straight from the third through the ninth.

For the Patriots, Uchman (1-1) allowed three runs on one hit and two walks in 1.0 inning.  Meeks gave up two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.  Elliott tossed 3.1 innings of one-hit ball.  Egan allowed one run on three hits in 2.0 innings.

For the Blue Devils, Weaver allowed three runs on two hits in 3.0 innings.  Relievers Max Stammel, Gabe Nard and Reid Easterly each tossed 2.0 hitless innings.  Easterly notched the save.

The Patriots and Blue Devils wrap up the two-game series on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. at Jack Coombs Field in Durham, N.C.
