Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Va. – The George Mason lacrosse team dropped their neutral site season opener to Kent State, 9-13.
Last year's second-most goal scorer
Dahlia Trippel tied a team-most two goals, joined only by
Daniella Jimenez and
Peyton Farley who also finished with two goals. Jimenez and Farley also had one assist each.
Freshmen
Catherine Pollard and
Giselle Torain each scored their first goal in the Green & Gold, and Pollard's twin sister Julia led the Patriots in ground balls with three.
The Golden Flash jumped out to a quick start, scoring two goals in the first five minutes. Junior captain
Kate Anders broke the ice for the Patriots, scoring the first goal of the season with 3:55 left in the first quarter. 32 seconds later, Jimenez tied the game at 2-2.
Kent State scored once more in the first quarter and tallied three more goals to make it 6-2 before the Patriots answered. A couple of exchanged goals later, it wasn't until 9:21 left in the 3
rd quarter that the Patriots made a run of their own thanks to goals from C. Pollard, Trippel, and Jimenez, putting George Mason within one.
The Golden Flash responded with four goals in five minutes, making a comeback hard for the Patriots. They didn't give up, with two goals from
Kaitlyn Bestick and Farley, but it was too much to overcome in the end.
