Big Innings Push Patriots Past William & Mary

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team hammered out 13 hits on the way to a 12-1 win over William & Mary on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

THE LEADOFF
  • Junior starter Logan Rumberg scattered three hits and struck out six without a walk to earn the win.
  • Eight players in the lineup drove in at least one run and four players had a multi-hit game.
  • Sophomore first baseman Owen Hull went 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.
  • Junior center fielder James Quinn-Irons and freshman left fielder Lucas Alberti each had two hits, drove in a run and scored two runs.
  • Junior catcher Garrett Pancione made his first start as a Patriot.
  • The Patriots have scored 64 runs over their last five games.
William & Mary (4-4) took the lead in the first against the Patriots (4-4).  With two outs, senior left Lucas Charmichael doubled and scored on a triple by sophomore first baseman Anthony Greco for the Tribe's lone run of the day.

Rumberg then retired 13 of the next 15 batters he faced.  He stuck out the side in the fourth.

George Mason sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs on four hits in the bottom of the third against William & Mary sophomore starter Chad Yates.

Pancione led off with a walk and junior right fielder Drew Canody reached on an error.  Alberti drove in a run with a single through the left side and Hull knocked in another with an infield single to put the Patriots in front, 2-0.  Hull then advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt and Alberti stole home to make it 3-0.

Quinn-Irons drove in a run with a double, while sophomore second baseman Toby Hueber and junior shortstop Owen Clyne each singled in a run to increase the advantage to 6-1.

In the home half of the sixth, the Patriots again sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs on six hits to pad the lead to 12-1.

The Patriots loaded the bases with singles by Alberti, Hull and Quinn-Irons.  Sophomore third baseman Jake Butler and freshman designated hitter Andrew Raymond each drove in a pair of runs with a base hit, and Canody plated two more with a two-out single.

George Mason defeated William & Mary for the first time since April 27, 2013, snapping a 10-game losing streak to the Tribe.

For the Patriots, Rumberg (1-1) allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts over 5.0 innings to earn the win.  Sophomores Shaun Okeeffe and Cole Egan each tossed one scoreless inning.

For the Tribe, Yates (0-2) gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits in 2.0 innings and took the loss.  Freshman Zach Boyd surrendered four runs on five hits in 2.0 innings.  Freshman Tyler Kelly allowed two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning of work.

Hull went 3-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored.  Alberti was 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.  Quinn-Irons finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

The Patriots continue the homestand with three games against Monmouth beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
