FAIRFAX, Va. – The Patriots hit four home runs and collected a season-high 18 hits in a 14-4 win in the series finale over Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
THE LEADOFF
- Freshman pitcher Jake Drumm didn't allow an earned run over three innings of work and earned his first collegiate win.
- Junior center fielder James Quinn-Irons went 3-for-5 with a pair of two-run home runs.
- Junior shortstop Owen Clyne went 2-for-3, hit his first home run as a Patriot, drove in four runs and scored three runs.
- Junior right fielder Drew Canody finished 2-for-4, hit his second home run of the season and had three RBI.
- The Patriots won two of three games in the series.
Saint Peter's (2-5) took the lead in the top of the first against George Mason (3-4) junior starter
Brandon Cassedy. Junior second baseman Garrett Greco and junior left fielder Tommy Kendrick each drew a walk to start the frame and senior catcher Ashby Vining drove in a run with a groundout to put the Peacocks in front, 1-0.
The Patriots sent nine batters to the plate in the home half of the inning and scored four runs on five hits against Saint Peter's junior starter Caden Goodwin to take the lead for good. Quinn-Irons and Clyne each hit a two-run home run to vault George Mason ahead, 4-1.
In the second, George Mason added four runs on five more hits against Goodwin and freshman reliever Lance Mittelman.
With one out, sophomore first baseman
Owen Hull singled and stole second. With two outs, Hull swiped third and freshman catcher
Andrew Raymond drove in a run with a single to make it 5-1. Sophomore third baseman
Jake Butler singled to keep the line moving and Clyne followed with a two-run double to left to increase the advantage to 7-1. Graduate student designated hitter
Sam Lavin then singled through the right side with Clyne crossing the plate with the eighth run of the day.
In the bottom of the third, Canody launched a leadoff home run over the left field fence, his second of the season, to pad the lead to 9-1.
Saint Peter's loaded the bases against Drumm in the top of the fourth on a walk, hit by pitch and a single. The Peacocks scored a run on an error and another on a single to trim the Patriots lead to 9-3.
With two out and two on in the bottom of the fourth, Canody doubled in a pair of runs to make it an 11-3 game. Sophomore second baseman
Toby Hueber and Clyne, who had walked, scored on the play.
After a leadoff walk to Hull in the bottom of the fifth, Quinn-Irons smashed his second two-run home run of the afternoon to center field to push the lead to 13-3.
The teams traded runs in the seventh inning.
Saint Peter's put runners on the corners with singles against George Mason senior reliever
Britt Yount. Junior shortstop Logan Baker then plated a run with a single.
Quinn-Irons bunted his way on to start the home half of the inning and scrambled to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Raymond then doubled to left field with Quinn-Irons racing across the plate for the 14-4 final in seven innings.
For the Patriots, Cassedy allowed one run on two hits in 3.0 innings in a no-decision. Drumm (1-0) scattered two hits over 3.0 innings and picked up his first career win.
For the Peacocks, Goodwin (0-1) surrendered eight runs, six earned, on nine hits in 1.2 innings and took the loss. Mittelman gave up five runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.
Quinn-Irons went 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored. Clyne was 2-for-3 with a home run, double, four RBI and three runs scored. Canody finished 2-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBI. Butler went 3-for-4 and scored three runs.
Eight players had a multi-hit game for the Patriots.
The Patriots continue their homestand when they host William & Mary on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
