FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team fell to Saint Peter's, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

THE LEADOFF
  • Junior center fielder James Quinn-Irons went 3-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run.
  • Sophomore second baseman Jake Butler was 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
  • Freshman left fielder Lucas Alberti finished 2-for-4, drove in a run and scored a run.
Saint Peter's (2-4) took the lead in the top of the first against George Mason (2-4) graduate student starter Connor O'Hara.  Saint Peter's junior second baseman Garrett Greco led off with a triple and scored on a groundout to put the Peacocks in front, 1-0.

The Patriots took advantage of a fielding error in the bottom of the third to take the lead.  With one out, graduate student first baseman Jonny Wall reached on an error and junior right fielder Drew Canody followed with a single.  Alberti came through with a double to left field with Wall crossing the plate to tie the game, 1-1.  With two outs, Quinn-Irons knocked in a pair of runs with a double to left-center to give the Patriots a 3-1 advantage.

Saint Peter's loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth and senior right fielder Ben Williams forced in a run with a walk to make it a one-run game, 3-2.

The Peacocks sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the fifth and scored three runs, two on RBI singles and another on a wild pitch, against O'Hara and junior reliever Logan Rumberg to make it 5-3.

In the top of the sixth, the Peacocks hit a two-run home run with two outs against Patriots junior Connor Knox to increase the lead to 7-3.

The Patriots responded in the home half of the inning against Saint Peter's freshman reliever Will Paxton with three runs on four hits to pull within a run at 7-6.  George Mason freshman catcher Andrew Raymond smashed a two-run double to center and Butler plated a run with a single

Saint Peter's added insurance in the top of the eighth against Knox and sophomore Cole Egan, scoring three runs on a two-run double and RBI single to push the lead to 10-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, Butler led off with a single and Raymond walked.  Sophomore second baseman Tody Hueber then drove in a run with a single through the left side of the infield to trim the lead to 10-7.  With two outs, Alberti was hit by a pitch to load the bases and put the tying runs on base, but Paxton got out of the jam with a fly out to end the game.

For the Patriots, O'Hara (0-1) allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits in 4.0 innings and took the loss.  He stuck out four and walked four.  Rumberg gave up one run on three hits in 1.0 inning.  Knox surrendered three runs, two earned, on two hits in 2.1 innings.  Egan allowed two unearned runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.
