BLACKSBURG, Va. – Ekansh Kumar defeats the #9 seed in the main draw and
Edgar Vilain wins two matches to qualify for the main draw at the ITA Regional Tournament in Blacksburg, Va.
Kumar completed the tournament with a 1-1 singles record. He defeated #9 seed David Ekpenyong from Liberty University 6-0, 6-4 in the R64 before losing to Mats Bredschneijder of VCU 1-6, 1-6.
Freshman
Edgar Vilain achieved a 2-2 singles record. In the qualifying draw, he defeated William & Mary's Raz Katz, 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 6-2, and Navy's J.J. Etterbeek, 6-3, 6-4. With the two wins, Vilain qualified for the main draw. Vilain drops two matches with losses to Aryan Saleh of ODU, 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, and James Madison's Francisco Sinopoli, 3-6, 4-6.
Junior
Deniz Okyay won his qualifying consolation match, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5 against James Madison's Grant Kroodsma before losing to ODU's Zechariah Hamrouni, 0-6, 1-6.
Sophomore
Shari Saeed began the tournament with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 victory against Loyola Maryland's Ryan Gill before being defeated by James Madison's Gur Libal, 6-4, 4-6, 0-6.
Senior
Zavan Fahim was defeated by William & Mary's Austin Cohen, 1-6, 4-6, before winning, 6-4, 6-1, against Louis Moldenhauer from Loyola Maryland.
Freshman
Adria Franco drops his first match, 6-2, 4-6, 2-6, against Navy's Steve Nguyen before earning a victory against Mount St. Mary's Lucas Evans.
Graduate student
Niza Simunyola and senior
Monil Lotlikar paired up to go 1-1 in doubles action. They defeated Nick Lawliss and Ryan Gill of Loyola Maryland, 8-1, before losing to Virginia Tech's Blake Hilsen and Eyal Shumilov, 1-8.
