CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The George Mason University women's rowing team capped a season of growth with a momentum-building day of racing at Saturday's A-10 Championship in the Garden State.
 
GM's Varsity 4+ led the charge for the Green & Gold, capturing the petite final crown. The Patriot Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 4+ boats also put together strong days on the water.
 
"We are excited about our Varsity 4+ boat's work today," head coach Joseph Richards said. "It really shows the depth of the program. Overall, this is our best performance across the board over the last several seasons. Congratulations to our seniors on the completion of their time at Mason and successful careers as a part of our women's rowing program."
 
The Varsity 4+ placed fourth in its morning heat (8:41.39), then followed up that race with a title-winning performance. The boat's time of 8:44.05 in the petite final topped second-place La Salle by more than 30 seconds.
 
George Mason's Varsity 8+ compiled a pair of good races on Saturday. In the morning heat, the Patriots placed fourth in a time of 7:17.03, more than 14 seconds ahead of Dayton. Then, in the petite final, GM again topped the Flyers, finishing in 7:19.28 for a second-place showing.
 
Elsewhere, the Patriots' Second Varsity 8+ crew placed fifth in its morning heat (7:46.97) and third in the afternoon petite final (8:00.70).
 
The Green & Gold also sent out a Second Varsity 4+ boat on Saturday, and that crew competed in a final only race while finishing fifth in 9:09.28.
 
Overall, the Patriots placed eighth in the final league standings, improving upon last season's finish. At the conclusion of the event, junior Ava Northen was named to the All-A-10 Second Team, marking the first time in her career she has garnered the accolade.
