GEORGE MASON 7, ST. BONAVENTURE 2
Saturday's single game saw St. Bonaventure take an early lead, but the Patriot offense woke up and scored at least one run in the final four innings of the game. Seniors Carly Cooper, Maddy Myers and Rachel Warrens all played pivotal roles in securing the first win of the weekend series.
Kymora Wang (1-2, 2 RBI, SF) was the Bonnies' only run generator, as the two only runs of the game were driven in by the freshman right fielder. She hit an RBI single up the middle in the top of the first inning to score Brooke Bobbey (1-1, 2 R, 2 BB, SB) and give St. Bonaventure an early 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second and top of the third inning, George Mason leveled the game with an
Elyssa DeRosa (2-3, RBI, BB, SB) RBI single down the left field line that scored
Marlaina Bozek (1-4, 2 R, 2B) from second. The Patriots then took the lead the following inning with a leadoff home run by
Maddy Myers (2-2, R, 2 RBI HR, SF) on the very first pitch.
The Patriots broke the game wide open in the fifth inning by batting around and adding three more runs. After Bozek hit a double to left center, she was sent home by a
Rachel Warrens (3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 3B, SB) single to center. Later, with the bases loaded, Myers cashed in with her second RBI on the day with a sacrifice fly to left which scored Warrens from third. Finally, freshman
Emily Lampela (2-3 RBI) drove in the final run of the inning with a single up the middle, scoring DeRosa from second.
The Bonnies scored one run in the top of the sixth inning via a Wang RBI sacrifice fly that scored Bobbey again, but George Mason scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning which included an RBI triple by Warrens. After the triple, she would steal home as well in a double-steal attempt by DeRosa.
Starting pitcher Carly Cooper (7.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) pitched a very solid complete game, striking out five batters and only allowing two hits and two walks. After Cooper allowed the first hit that drove in the first run for the Bonnies in the top of the first inning, the Seneca Rocks, WVa., native did not allow another hit until the sixth inning, where Bobbey got on base with a leadoff bunt single to third on the first pitch.
