Patriots Wrap Up Regular Season Against Hawks

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's lacrosse team will wrap up its' historic regular season on Saturday when it welcomes Saint Joseph's to Fairfax for Senior Day.
 
The game holds important weight for both teams with seeding for the Atlantic 10 still up for grabs across the conference. Entering the final game of the regular season, the Patriots sit at sixth in the standings and the Hawks sit at fourth.
 
Last weekend, Mason picked up a come-from-behind victory on the road at La Salle. Led by seven goals from Shannon Tuozzo, Mason picked up an important 16-11 victory over the Explorers. Saint Joseph's dominated Duquesne 17-5 at home on Senior Day.
 
All time, Saint Joseph's holds a 10-7 series record over Mason, including four of the last five meetings. Last season, the Hawks downed the Patriots 19-0 on the road in the Atlantic 10 opener.
 
PATRIOT POINTS
  • Three Patriots have earned Atlantic 10 Weekly Honors this season: Meghan Deehan (Defensive, Co-Defensive), Shannon Tuozzo (Co-Offensive) and Daniella Jimenez (Rookie, twice)
  • Shannon Tuozzo ranks in the top-4 in the Atlantic 10 in goals, shots, points and draw controls. She is also t-16th in the NCAA in goals with 56
  • The graduate student also leads the team in points (69), assists (13), ground balls (25) and draw controls (92) and is second in caused turnovers (9)
  • Tuozzo's 92 draw controls are the third-most in a single season in program history and she can become just the second player in Mason history to reach 100 in a season
  • Four other Patriots have tallied 20+ goals: Dahlia Trippel (32), Chloe Reed (22), Peyton Farley (24) and Morgan Gunn (24)
  • Defensively,  Ciara Curtis, Gabby Rizzio and Melanie Hutchinson have all tallied a team-high 11 caused turnovers
  • Lauren Distad is second on the team with 84 draw controls, as she and Tuozzo are the only two teammates in the Atlantic 10 with 80+ draw controls each, while the team is second in the Atlantic 10 in draws per game
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Saint Joseph's sits at 9-6 overall and 5-3 in Atlantic 10 play, including winning five of its' last six contests, highlighted by a ranked win over previous No. 17 Navy, 14-13. Most recently, the Hawks took down Duquesne, 17-5, and have suffered in-conference losses to Davidson (10-9), Richmond (16-12) and UMass (16-11).
 
In a well-balanced offense, five players have tallied 20+ goals and two have tallied 25+ assists and 15+ goals. Lisa Ross (50 points) and Alexa Capozzoli (47 points) lead the team in points and are the only two players with double-figure goals and assists. Ross paces the offense with 32 assists (2nd, A-10) with 18 goals and Capozzoli runs a balanced game with 27 assists and 20 goals. Maddie Yoder leads the team with 36 goals on the year (8th, A-10).
 
Defensively, Bella Miceli leads the team with 55 draw control wins on the year (8th, A-10) and also paces the Hawks with 18 caused turnovers. Miceli and MaryRose Berry are second on the squad with 23 ground balls. Goalkeeper Jorden Concordia has started all 15 games in net for Saint Joe's and leads the conference with 10.93 saves per game and an impressive .529 save percentage. She also leads the team with 35 ground balls.
 
UP NEXT
Mason will await the completion of regular season play by all 10 Atlantic 10 teams today to know its' seeding in the A-10 tournament. Opening rounds in Pittsburgh, Pa. begin on Thursday, May 2.
