Fairfax, Va. -- George Mason golfer JJ Powell was named this week's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. This is Powell's first career conference weekly honor.
Powell helped the Patriots earn runner-up honors, the team's best finish of the season, at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate played at the famed public course in Williamsburg, Va. Prior to this tournament, Mason finished a season-best third at the Red Bandana Invitational, the opening tournament of the season.
The freshman earned a second straight top 10 standing with a fourth-place finish, the best in his first collegiate year, at the event. Powell (73-72-68=213) carded a 3-under-par 68 in the final round, moving up nine places on the board after 36 holes.
A native of Midlothian, Va., Powell ranked third overall in birdies (13) in the tournament, including six in the final round.
Powell has posted five top 25 finishes in eight tournaments this season.
