Game Recap: Softball |

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason softball team (14-29, 5-12 A-10) were swept by cross-river rival George Washington (22-20, 8-9 A-10) in Tuesday's doubleheader at GW Softball Field. In Game One, the Revolutionaries Run-Ruled the Patriots 10-2 in five innings. In Game Two, the Revolutionaries walked-off the Patriots 2-1 in the eighth inning.

PATRIOT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Marlaina Bozek went 4-for-7 across both games. She went 3-for-3 Game One which included a double and a run scored.

  • Harlowe Nigh returned to the circle for the first time since March 5th. Her first out recorded completed seven consecutive scoreless innings in relief that dated back to Feb. 24th.

  • Kamryn Inman and Maddy Myers recorded RBI in Game One

GAME ONE: GEORGE MASON 2, GEORGE WASHINGTON 10 (5 INNINGS)
In Game One, the Revolutionaries' offense overpowered the Patriots. Headlined by a career-day by Ashley Corpuz (2-2, 3 R, 6 RBI, 2 HR, 2 BB), who hit two home runs and drove in six RBI, George Washington scored four runs in the first, three runs in the second, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game early via Run-Rule.

In the bottom of the first inning, George Washington scored four runs on just one hit, as all the runs scored in the inning were by walk with the bases loaded or a wild pitch.

The Patriots would get on the board in the top of the second inning thanks to a Kamryn Inman (1-2, RBI) RBI single that drove in Emily Lampela (0-0, R, 2 BB) from second base.

The Revolutionaries would quickly extend the lead in the bottom of the second with a Corpuz three-run home run. In the top of the third, Mason would get another run back, this time by a productive ground out by Maddy Myers (0-3, RBI) that scored Marlaina Bozek (3-3, R, 2B) from third.

Bozek was the only player in the game on either side to hit a perfect 3-for-3. The senior started off with a single up the middle in the first inning, followed by a double to right center in the third and finally  legging out an infield single hit to second base in the top of the fifth.

George Washington's Corpuz would strike for another home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The sophomore from Ladera Ranch, Calif., hit a solo shot to left field, extending the home team's lead to 8-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, Mason relief pitcher Harlowe Nigh (0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 WP) was called to pitch in the circle. It was the sophomore's first time back pitching since March 5 in Game Two against UMass Lowell. Nigh recorded the first out of the inning rather quickly, and with that out, she had successfully recorded seven consecutive scoreless innings pitching in relief dating back to Feb. 24 against Providence.

Unfortunately for Nigh and the Patriots, the Revolutionaries broke the scoreless streak, as they would score off a wild pitch and ultimately end the game on a Corpuz RBI walk with the bases loaded. This was Corpuz's second time drawing a bases-loaded RBI walk in the game, as her first walk of the game in the first inning rendered the same result.

Since the score was 10-2 and it was the fifth inning, the game was automatically called due to the Run-Rule.

GAME TWO: GEORGE MASON 1, GEORGE WASHINGTON 2 (8 INNINGS)
Game Two was a pitchers' duel between Mason's Jordan Tallman (7.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 BB, 3 K) and George Washington's Cece Smith (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 5 K). GW would later put in Sophia Torreso (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K) in the seventh and eighth innings and would end up picking up her second win on the day, as she was Game One's starter as well.

In the top of the second inning, Tallman the Patriot defense found themselves with the bases loaded with only one out. However, Mason was able to navigate through the jam and prevent any runs from scoring with a Tallman strikeout and a subsequent fly out to center fielder Emily Lampela (0-3) to end the inning.

The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. After Reese Torres (0-2, R, BB) drew a leadoff walk, Alexa Williams (1-4, RBI, 2B) hit an RBI double to right field, scoring Torres all the way from first.

The Patriots were unable to find any rhythm on the offensive side, but they capitalized on a GW error in the top of the sixth inning. After catcher Zoe Vozick (1-3, 2B) led off with a double to right center, she would be replaced by pinch runner Charlotte Montgomery (1 R). After a productive Rachel Warrens (1-4) ground out to second which moved Montgomery over to third, Marlaina Bozek (1-4) was up to bat. Bozek grounded the ball to the GW shortstop, who then threw it to first baseman Abby Schaub (0-3). Schaub, however, dropped the ball, which allowed Bozek to reach first and Montgomery to score.

Tied a 1-1, the game would head into extra innings for the first time in series history. Other than a Warrens single to center, the Patriots were unable to produce a run in the top of the inning.

The Revolutionaries in the bottom of the eighth inning had runners on first and second with only one out. Up to bat was Cadence Gilliland (1-3, RBI, 2B, BB), who ripped the game-winning RBI with a double down the left field line, scoring Paige Hayward (1-3, R) from second.
