Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason golf team will travel to State College, Pa. for its final regular season tournament, the 47th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate, April 13-14.
The 14-team field will play a two-day tournament featuring three rounds at the par 71 Penn State Blue Course. The host Lions have won the annual tournament eight straight years.
Last Time Out: The George Mason golf team finished fifth at the Redhawk Invitational on the famed Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place. It's the second top five finish for Mason after earning runner-up honors last week at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate.
Colin Slater led the Patriots t-15 in the 106-player field. After a first-round 73, the senior put together two sub-par 70s (-1) to earn his best finish of the season. He posted four birdies in the final round today, 11 overall. Slater was consistent and finished fourth in par 4 scoring (3.87).
History at Rutherford Intercollegiate: The Patriots have participated in the annual tournament 16 times. Mason's best finish is fifth place overall during the 2002-03 season. The George Mason golf team finished 10th last season at the 46th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate.
Aryan Vuradi paced the Patriots in the three-round tournament with a four-over par 217 at the Penn State Blue Course. After five birdies in the second round, Vuradi managed only one birdie in the final round. It was his second top 20 win in his initial collegiate season. Junior
Nikita Gubenko scored a 73 in the final round, which included four bogeys and two birdies. He finished t-28 in the field.
Lion Connection: Mason Head Coach
Greg Pieczynski played golf for the host Nittany Lions, where he was a captain, two-time Academic All-American. He was crowned the individual champion in the 2004 Rutherford Intercollegiate with a three-round 208 (-5).
